Hematite, an iron oxide (Fe₂O₃), is a remarkable stone that takes its name from Greek etymology. In fact, in ancient Greek "haimatitis" (αἱματίτης λίθος) means "blood stone" ("haima" meaning "blood"). This refers to the blood-red color of hematite powder when ground.
